What is CPTSD?

What is CPTSD?What is CPTSD?

Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) is kind of like PTSD’s more intense cousin. While PTSD usually stems from one major traumatic event, CPTSD develops after going through ongoing trauma. Things like long-term abuse, neglect, or situations where you felt powerless for a long time. It’s not just one bad moment…it’s a whole series of them that lead to trauma.

People living with CPTSD often deal with flashbacks, anxiety, emotional ups and downs, trouble trusting others, and a constant sense of being “on edge.” It can feel like your mind is always scanning for danger, even when you’re technically safe. And yeah, that can be exhausting.

Complex PTSD is different from PTSD. With PTSD, there’s typically one traumatic incident that an individual is dealing with; however, complex PTSD is a diagnosis that occurs when a person experiences repeated episodes of trauma that can span a number of years.

Living with CPTSD isn’t just about managing symptoms, it’s about learning how to navigate daily life while carrying the weight of what you’ve been through. Relationships, work, even simple tasks can feel overwhelming. There are days when just making it through feels like a win. And honestly? It is.

But here’s the thing: while it’s tough (and it is), there’s also an incredible strength that grows from surviving something so hard. Healing isn’t quick or easy, but it is possible. Bit by bit, you can start to feel safer, more in control, and more connected to yourself and others. It’s a journey, messy, painful, and sometimes beautiful.

So if you’re dealing with CPTSD, please know: you’re not alone. Your story matters. Your healing matters. And you deserve support, peace, and a life that feels good to live.
